Sometimes the best way forward is to start over—especially when software on a personal computer begins to misbehave. Given enough time, every system develops errors or slows down, and the time-honored practice of “reinstalling” still solves many of those problems.
We’ve come a long way since the early days of reinstalling. Back then, you often needed professional help just to avoid losing important data or ending up with a computer that refused to boot. Today, the process has become simple enough that almost anyone can reinstall an operating system without fear.
This article reviews the current state of reinstalling the latest Windows and macOS systems. We’ll also look at reinstalling your Puritas applications—because the process works similarly, and of course, this is a Puritas newsletter. Let’s begin with the two basic choices you have, whether you’re reinstalling an operating system or our software:
What Is a Reinstall?
A reinstall keeps most of your existing configuration—user profiles, preferences, and sometimes even application settings. It offers a faster, less disruptive way to address minor issues while preserving your data and overall setup.
What Is a Fresh Install?
A fresh install takes the opposite approach, wiping everything. It clears all system files, settings, and local data, then replaces them with clean versions. This method eliminates conflicts and leftover configurations that can slow your system or cause errors.
The most important rule for a fresh install is simple: Back Up Your Data! Backups are always smart when reinstalling or deleting anything on your computer. Fortunately, modern versions of Windows and macOS strongly encourage the use of cloud accounts (Microsoft Live, Apple ID, iCloud, OneDrive), so they often automatically back up your documents and settings. That shift makes starting over far less risky—and usually well worth the performance boost.
Windows 11 Reinstall
Open the Recovery Menu
- Go to Settings → System → Recovery.
- Under Recovery Options, click Reset this PC.
- Click Reset PC to begin.
Windows offers two ways to refresh your system:
- Keep My Files – reinstalls Windows while keeping your personal data. You’ll need to reinstall apps, including your Puritas software.
- Remove Everything – wipes the entire system for a clean slate. This option works best when dealing with persistent errors, malware, or hardware changes.
Once the reinstall finishes, sign in with your Microsoft account. Windows restores most personal settings, wallpapers, Edge bookmarks, and any documents stored in OneDrive. As mentioned, cloud syncing now handles a lot of this automatically, so a complete wipe isn’t nearly as risky as it used to be.
macOS: Reinstall
Step 1: Enter Recovery Mode
- Shut down your Mac completely.
- Hold the correct key combination while powering it on:
- Intel Macs: hold Command (⌘) + R until you see the Apple logo.
- Apple Silicon Macs: press and hold the Power button until “Loading Startup Options” appears, then choose Options → Continue.
This sequence launches macOS Recovery.
From here, macOS offers two reinstall options similar to Windows:
- Reinstall macOS – keeps your files, apps, and user data while replacing system software.
- Erase and Reinstall – wipes the entire drive so you start with an immaculate system.
Once you reinstall and sign in again, macOS restores much of your personal data and configuration through iCloud Drive, Keychain, and other synced services.
Reinstalling Puritas Software
Puritas software follows the same logic: you can reinstall or start fresh. Both options are safe when handled correctly.
Standard Reinstall
A standard reinstall updates the program files but keeps your data and client folders intact. None of your case files, settings, or custom entries disappear.
Reinstalling on Windows
- Locate your installer. Download the latest version of your Puritas software from our website or use your earlier download.
- Run the installer. Double-click the installer and follow the prompts.
- If you install the same version, Windows prompts you to uninstall the existing copy first.
- If you install a newer version, the installer automatically overwrites the old program.
- The installer updates components in C:\Program Files (x86)\Puritas while leaving your saved data—stored in Documents → Puritas—untouched.
Reinstalling on macOS
- Download the latest version of the app from our website.
- Drag the new app into your Applications folder. When macOS asks whether to replace the existing version, click Replace.
- Your client data remains in Documents, ready to use with the updated app.
Starting Over
Sometimes a stubborn error or corrupted setting requires a fresh install of your Puritas application.
A Fresh Install on Windows
- Quit all Puritas applications.
- Back up any data you want to keep.
- Copy your data folder:
- Open File Explorer → Documents → Puritas.
- Copy this folder to a USB drive, cloud storage, or network location.
- Delete the data folders:
- In Documents, delete the Puritas folder.
- In Local Disk (C:), look for C:\Puritas and delete it if present.
- These steps remove old settings, configurations, and leftover files.
- (Optional) Remove the old program folder:
- Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Puritas
- Delete the relevant program folder.
- Reboot Windows.
- Download the latest installer from our website.
- Run the installer as though installing for the first time.
- (Optional) Restore selected data by copying back only the client files you want.
A Fresh Install on macOS
- Quit the app and back up your data.
- Delete the data folder in Documents by dragging the Puritas folder to the Trash.
- Remove the application from Applications by dragging it to the Trash.
- Reboot macOS.
- Install the app as new by dragging it into the Applications folder.
- Restore selected data from your backup if needed.
