Professional-Grade New York Estate Tax Preparation Made Simple

Our New York State Estate Tax (Form ET-706) Software is designed for attorneys, accountants, and financial professionals who demand accuracy, efficiency, and compliance. It is the first in a planned line of state estate tax programs built to work directly with our federal Form 706 software — so the work you have already done carries straight across.

Built for 2026

  • $7,350,000 New York basic exclusion amount — For decedents dying in 2026
  • The gap with the federal exclusion has never been wider — The federal basic exclusion is now $15,000,000 and, under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, permanent. New York’s exclusion is less than half of it. An estate can owe the IRS nothing at all and still owe New York a return and a substantial tax bill.
  • The New York estate tax cliff, handled correctly — New York’s exclusion is not a deduction off the top. Once the taxable estate passes 105% of the exclusion — $7,717,500 — the benefit is gone entirely and tax is computed on the whole estate from the first dollar. In the narrow band just below that line the exclusion phases out step by step under the worksheet in the state’s instructions. All three zones are applied automatically.
  • Three-year gift add-back still in force — Schedule D remains live, and the program prompts for includible gifts on every return.
  • No portability in New York — Unlike the federal exclusion, New York’s is strictly individual; a deceased spouse’s unused exclusion is simply lost. The program makes no federal DSUE assumption at the state level.
  • Official ET-706 rate schedule — All fifteen brackets are built in, from 3.06% on the first $500,000 up to $1,082,800 plus 16% above $10,100,000. You never look up a table.
  • Built for the current form — Every page, schedule and line matches the ET-706 revision New York designates for the decedent’s date of death, including the scannable page 1 and page 2 layouts.

Why New York Needs Its Own Return

New York requires an estate tax return whenever the New York gross estate exceeds the state exclusion, regardless of whether a federal return is due. And to file it, New York wants a completed federal Form 706 attached to the ET-706, whether or not the IRS ever receives one.

In other words, the federal 706 gets prepared either way. Our software makes that work count twice.

Works With Your Federal Form 706

  • Import a completed federal client file — Open the client file from our U.S. Estate Tax (Form 706) software and your ET-706 opens already populated: decedent, executor, attorney, surrogate’s court, and every asset in the estate.
  • Calculated federal totals come across, not just raw data — The federal gross estate and the total federal deductions land on Schedule A. The federal Schedule J, K, L, M and O totals land in Schedule E, Column A, ready for the New York allocation.
  • Asset values follow the federal return exactly — Values use the same rules as our federal program, including the alternate valuation election and the percent-includible adjustment on jointly owned property. Your ET-706 cannot disagree with the 706 you already filed.
  • Or start from scratch — The program is fully standalone. Every screen accepts manual entry, and a return typed from nothing behaves exactly like an imported one.
  • Nothing is silently left blank — On import the program lists exactly what New York still needs from you: the New York / non-New York deduction allocation, the situs of each asset, and any taxable gifts made within three years of death.

All Your Assets on One Screen

Every asset in the estate appears in a single review list instead of being scattered across schedules.

  • See the whole estate at a glance — and edit any item in place.
  • Answer facts, not legal conclusions — For each asset the program asks what it is and where it is, never which schedule it belongs on.
  • The program does the placement — It sorts real and tangible property onto Schedule B or Schedule C, routes intangible property to the nonresident intangible line, and keeps a running count of assets still needing an answer.

Why Choose Our Software?

  • Print-Shop Quality Forms — Generate a faithful replica of the official ET-706 on any printer, built to the state’s own measured geometry — scan marks and per-page barcodes included.
  • Automatic Calculations — Every derived line is computed for you and marked on screen. Override any figure when you need to and the program leaves your entry alone from then on.
  • Fully Standalone Application — Not a script, spreadsheet, or PDF template — a full-featured program built for compliance.
  • Seamless Microsoft Word Integration — The finished return opens in Word or LibreOffice Writer for review and printing.
  • Smart Continuation Sheets — Schedules B, C and D overflow onto continuation sheets automatically, filled and appended at print time. Long property descriptions print in full.
  • Resident and Nonresident Returns — Both paths are complete, and the program shows and prints only the part that applies. You are never reading past fifteen lines that do not concern your return.
  • Guided Entry — Back and Next walk you through the return in the order the figures actually depend on one another.
  • Organized Data Management — Recent client files one click away; client, import and output folders configurable for firms working from a network share.
  • Easy Upgrades — Built-in update checking; download new versions any time.
  • Online Manual and Demonstration Video — Help resources at puritas-springs.com.
