The more things change, the more they stay the same.
The IRS has made some changes to Form 706 this year. The forms still collect essentially the same information, but you’ll notice a few additional fields—most notably, fields for foreign addresses and banking information to allow direct deposits or payments.
The bigger shift from a filing perspective involves how the IRS now provides the forms and how continuation pages work.
Forms and Schedules Download Separately
In prior years, you could download Form 706 and all its schedules as a single file. Beginning in 2025, you must download each required schedule separately. The IRS may want to cut down on the unused schedules people mailed in, or help save on toner. Either way, they now offer each form and schedule as a separate download.
Introducing Schedule W – The Universal Continuation Page
Continuation pages have grown more complicated in this year’s Form 706. To simplify things, the IRS introduced a universal continuation page called Schedule W. If you need more room than a standard schedule provides, Schedule W steps in.
But this “simple” solution comes with its own quirks. Some schedules still include their own continuation page. Others rely entirely on Schedule W. A few even require a mix—both their own continuation page and Schedule W.
