Until recently, working with AI has been limited to typing questions into a web browser and receiving answers in return. That’s how most professionals have used tools like ChatGPT and Claude. You type, it responds, you copy the output somewhere useful. It works, but it’s a bit like dictating to someone over the phone.

The landscape is shifting. AI is transitioning from conversation to collaboration, and the tool driving this shift is Anthropic’s Claude desktop application. Instead of chatting with AI in a browser tab, you can now point it at an actual folder on your computer, such as a client matter folder, a case file, or a collection of research materials, and let it work alongside you, reading your documents, creating new ones, and editing existing files in place.

For offices that have been trying AI but are frustrated by the copy-and-paste workflow, this is a development worth paying attention to.

The Limits of Chat

Web-based AI chat is useful, but it has real limitations for legal work. Every conversation starts from scratch. The AI has no access to your files, your prior work product, or the context of the matter you’re handling. You end up spending significant time re-explaining the situation, pasting in document text, and then manually transferring the AI’s output back into your own documents.

Imagine if every time you walked into the office, your paralegal had no memory of any client, couldn’t access the filing cabinets, and could only work with whatever you read aloud. That’s essentially the web chat experience. It’s a capable mind with no hands and no memory.

How Claude is Different

The Claude desktop app solves this problem by offering three distinct interaction levels, all within a single application. Think of them as gears: you choose the level of engagement that fits the task at hand.

1. The Familiar Interface: Chat

Chat mode works exactly like the web interface you may already use. You ask questions, request drafts, brainstorm strategies, or get quick research summaries. It’s the same conversational AI experience, but running in a dedicated desktop application rather than a browser tab. For attorneys already comfortable with web-based AI, Chat mode requires zero adjustment. It’s your on-ramp.

2. Where the rubber meets the road: Cowork

Cowork mode is the breakthrough for AI users. When you switch to Cowork, you can point Claude at a folder on your computer. For example, a working folder for an estate matter. Claude can then read the documents in that folder, understand the context of the case, and produce work product that’s informed by everything you’ve already assembled.

Here’s a sample workflow:

• You put a signed retainer agreement, the decedent’s will, and a preliminary asset list into a case folder.
• You ask Claude to review the documents and draft a letter to the executor outlining the next steps.
• Claude reads all three documents, understands the relationships between them, and produces a draft letter that references specific provisions of the will and specific assets from your list.
• The letter is saved directly into your case folder, no copying, no pasting, no reformatting.

These steps represent a fundamentally different way of working with AI. The model isn’t guessing what your case is about based on a paragraph you typed; it’s reading the actual source material.

Cowork also supports Projects, which are persistent workspaces with their own files, instructions, and memory. You can set up a Project for a specific client or matter, give Claude standing instructions about your firm’s style and preferences, and pick up right where you left off each time you return to it. Claude remembers the context of prior sessions within that Project, so you’re not starting from scratch every Monday morning.

3. The Next Level: Code

Code mode is the most advanced tier, and while the name suggests it’s mostly for software developers, that’s not entirely the case. Code mode allows Claude to write and execute scripts, build small applications, and automate repetitive processes. For an office with even modest technical ambitions, this opens doors.

Consider a few examples:

•   Someone who handles dozens of real estate closings could have Claude build a simple tool that pulls data from a closing checklist and populates standard documents automatically.

•   A small estate planning firm could create a workflow that reads intake form data and generates first drafts of wills, powers of attorney, and health care proxies, all formatted to your specifications.

•   For litigation, it can automate the process of extracting key dates and deadlines from court orders and building a case timeline.

Why This Matters

Cowork lets AI participate in your work directly. Instead of the AI being a disconnected chatbot you consult in a browser tab, it becomes something closer to a junior associate who can sit at your desk, read the file, and start producing work product.

The practical advantages are significant. Context is preserved, Claude understands the matter because it has read the file. Output goes where it belongs, documents are created and saved directly in your case folder. Iteration is seamless. You revise in place rather than re-pasting updated versions. And with Projects, you build custom knowledge over time: Claude remembers your conventions, your preferred formats, and the history of the work.

Getting Started

The Claude desktop app is available for both macOS and Windows. A paid Claude subscription is required for Cowork and Code features but the free tier gives you Chat mode, which is a perfectly good place to start exploring. Here is an onboarding plan:

1. Download the desktop app and use Chat the same way you would on the web. Get comfortable with the interface.

2. Pick a low-stakes matter, perhaps an internal project or a closed file, and try Cowork. Point Claude at the folder and ask it to summarize the contents or draft a simple document.

3. As confidence builds, use Cowork on active matters. Set up Projects for your most frequent case types.

4. If you’re ready to go further, explore Code mode for automation opportunities specific to your practice.
